Improvising on Rhythm changes – #1

jkisor | February 19, 2011

This is my first jazz lesson in a series on improvising through the rhythm changes.   This section will be dealing with the “A” section.  The changes move by so fast, and there’s a lot of them.  These changes are functioning in one key, in this case Bb, and I want to demonstrate how to use the Bb major scale and make a whole lot of music without any chromatics or blues scales.  So just by using the Bb major scale, which is probably the first thing a lot of us learned, you can make a lot of music.

A few days ago I check out a great Willie video where he’s teaching Rhythm Changes improv complete with some downloads. Now I can’t find it. Was it pulled off the site? Makes me wonder what else is here that I can’t see?

  2. Nice lesson Justin! And of course great playing. Thanks

It’s an eye-opener to see what you can do with a Bb scale over these changes. Really wonderful lesson, thanks a million, Justin!
